Frequently asked questions

Prices, deadlines, the CRA and how we keep your information safe.

Getting started

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. The first 30-minute consultation is free and there's no obligation. We use it to understand what you need and give you a written quote.

Do I need to live in Ottawa?

No. We work with clients across Ontario by phone and video. The office is open for in-person appointments if you prefer.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes. With your permission we request last year's working papers and returns from your previous accountant and pick up from there.

Do you offer service in French?

Service is available in English and French.

Prices & billing

Are your prices fixed?

Monthly packages are fixed fees agreed in your engagement letter. One-off services are quoted before we start. Prices are in Canadian dollars and HST is added.

Why do you add HST?

Accounting services are taxable supplies. In Ontario the HST rate is 13%, so a $595 monthly package is $672.35 including HST.

How do I pay?

By pre-authorised debit or credit card for monthly packages, or Interac e-Transfer for one-off work.

What if my business grows mid-year?

We review your package together. If your volume changes for more than two months in a row, we suggest the right tier — never a surprise bill.

Tax & the CRA

When is my personal tax return due?

April 30 for most people; June 15 if you or your spouse or common-law partner were self-employed. Any balance owing is due April 30 either way.

When is my corporation's T2 due?

Six months after your fiscal year-end. The balance of tax is generally due two months after year-end, or three months for some Canadian-controlled private corporations.

How do you get access to my CRA account?

You authorise us as your representative through the CRA's Represent a Client service. You can remove the authorisation at any time.

How long should I keep my records?

Generally six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. Some records, such as those for capital property, should be kept longer.

Security & privacy

How do I send you documents safely?

Through a secure client portal link. Please don't email your social insurance number or full bank details.

Where is my information stored?

In accounting and document systems chosen for security and access controls. Our privacy policy lists the types of service providers we use and how we protect information.

Do you sell or share my information?

No. We use your information only to provide the services you engage us for, as explained in our privacy policy.
